Why so many flat roofs leak within a few years
Flat roofs get a bad name, and most of the time it's not the fact they're flat that's the problem — it's what they're covered in and how it's been fitted. Old bitumen felt with poor laps, blistered surface and no proper falls will let water pond and eventually find a way through. Once that starts, water tracks under the membrane and shows up somewhere completely different inside the house, which makes the actual source hard to find without stripping back.

Not every flat roof needs the same system. The right choice depends on size, use, detailing and what's around it.
EPDM rubber roofing
EPDM is a single sheet rubber membrane, often fitted in one piece across smaller roofs with minimal jointing, which removes a lot of the failure points you get with multiple felt layers. As an approved Firestone installer, we fit EPDM to the standard the manufacturer specifies, including correct adhesive coverage and edge detailing.
It's a strong option for extensions, garages, dormer roofs and porches across Leeds, Huddersfield and Bradford, particularly where the roof shape allows a single sheet to cover the whole area without excessive jointing.
GRP fibreglass roofing
GRP is a fully bonded, seamless finish that cures into a rigid, hard-wearing surface. It suits roofs that see foot traffic, balconies, or roofs with complex shapes and lots of upstands where a jointed sheet membrane would need too many junctions. As a GP Roofs approved installer, we fit GRP systems to their specified build-up of resin, matting and topcoat.

High-performance felt and Sika systems
Modern torch-on and cold-applied felt systems have moved a long way from old bitumen felt, offering better UV resistance and longer service life when correctly laid in the right number of layers with proper laps. As an approved Sika installer, we use their specified systems where felt is the right choice for the roof — often larger flat roof areas or where a client specifically wants a felt finish.
The key with any felt system is layers, laps and detailing at every upstand — corners cut here are exactly where the roof fails first.
Falls, outlets and ponding water
Every flat roof needs a designed fall towards an outlet or gutter, even if it looks flat to the eye. Falls as small as 1:40 or 1:80 make the difference between water running away and water sitting on the surface for days after rain.
Ponding water accelerates the ageing of any membrane and is one of the clearest signs an older flat roof needs replacing rather than patching. On a new build-up, we set falls correctly using firrings or tapered insulation rather than relying on the roof structure alone.
